Challenge

The client faced the challenge of quickly estimating the costs of building an FTTH network to evaluate the potential profitability of their planned investment.

Traditionally, network planners had to prepare initial designs manually. This process is burdened by the need to incorporate a wide range of critical information. Such a labor-intensive approach not only consumes significant time but also hinders the ability to make swift investment decisions.

Solution

Our primary objective was to enable quick cost estimation for building a telecommunications network based on the approximate size of the network within a designated area. To achieve this, we developed High-Level Design (HLD) Planner, a tool that allows our client to automatically generate a preliminary plan for their FTTH network. This plan serves as the foundation for accurately estimating the network construction costs, taking into account specific parameters set by the client.

Key Features of HLD Planner

  • Optimal Placement of Network Components: HLD Planner identifies the most suitable location for the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) based on the surrounding buildings within the target area.
  • Custom Configuration of Optical Splitters: It determines the location and type of optical splitters, tailored to meet the specific requirements and standards defined by our client.
  • Efficient Routing: The tool defines the approximate routes between buildings, splitters, and the OLT, and selects the appropriate size of optical cables.
  • Strategic Splicing Points: It identifies the locations for fiber optic splice enclosures and calculates the necessary number of splices.

HLD Planner designs the network layout, accounting for street topology and ensuring that the network avoids obstacles such as streams and train tracks.

It also integrates data on existing infrastructure, whether owned by the client or available for lease, and distinguishes between underground and overhead network segments.

The finalized design can be visualized in GIS applications like QGIS or GeoGrid.

Benefits

HLD Planner enabled our client to rapidly estimate the costs of building new networks, delivering a range of significant benefits:

Time Savings and Increased Efficiency

The tool streamlined the work of network designers by eliminating the need for the manual creation of initial FTTH network plans. These plans are essential for estimating investment costs, and by automating this step, the entire process became much faster and more efficient.

Improved Strategic Decision-Making

Automated generation of initial network designs and cost estimates allowed the client to quickly compare multiple design scenarios. This capability empowered them to make more informed and accurate strategic decisions regarding future investments.

The success of the HLD Planner was largely due to the use of the FME Platform, which played a crucial role in automating processes and creating scripts.

As a low-code solution, the FME Platform ensures that our client can continue to develop and customize the HLD Planner independently.

The Platform’s intuitive interface allows for easy adjustments and the addition of new rules without the need for programming expertise. If necessary, the tool can also be adapted and shared via a simple web app, making it accessible to subcontractors and other stakeholders, even if they don’t possess an FME Form license.
